Samband / Connection (Sv/Eng)

Engelska / English

After reading about all possible cell phone plans, I've decided to buy a satellite phone for my husband to use in his overseas travels. It is actually cheaper than not. For about $500 one can buy a phone that allows free incoming calls and E-mail. It only costs 85 cents per minute for outgoing calls ~ that's the cheapest price I've seen for the area to which he's traveling.

5 August 2011 Update: Have researched getting my husband a domestic cell phone overseas (a little cheaper for outgoing calls), but the coverage is so tiny in that country ~ only three cities. Better to have a satellite phone because he travels outside cities.

В среду / On Wednesday (Рус/Eng)

Russian

English

I've read almost half the book, Farishta. What is most memorable is how no one knows what should be done in Afghanistan. Everyone has an opinion and is frustrated, but the problems seem insurmountable. Probably similar to everywhere else...

The narrator seems to complain about her food and living conditions quite a lot, however compared with military life, her situation seems fairly luxurious. She is rather an unsympathetic character and even unlikable. She also seems mentally unstable. Is she really an example of the United States diplomatic corps?

Nonetheless, she still may have some interesting insights.

Baum Dienstag / Tree Tuesday (De/Eng)

Englisch / English

Today my husband worked on a huge tree stump. He is trying to remove the tree roots. It was really difficult! He has to sit in the big hole and saw through the roots. Not so comfortable a position to have. :)

Under this blog entry you can see a photo of the tree stump. Pretty big, isn't it?

Den Fjärde / The Fourth (Sv/Eng)

Svenska / Swedish

Engelska / English

Today was the Fourth of July. In the United States it's a big holiday with fireworks displays and parades. I was at a parade today in a little city and watched everything. I think that the parades are most fun for the children because they grab up all the candy that people standing in open trucks throw towards them. :)

Learning Dari, which is a relative of Farsi. Two for one!

Notes

Farsi provides a linguistic/grammatical structure for Dari, while Pashto/Pakhto, sometimes called a "stand-alone" language, is once removed from Dari. It seems logical to begin with Farsi and add Dari vocabulary lists.

I've seen Farsi's and Dari's linguistic relationship compared to learning British English to work in a certain area of the United States. The written languages are similar, but the pronunciation and vocabulary differ.

Anglais / English

When I think about the Russian language I think about the French language. My Russian instructor showed us the movie Anna Karenina (in Russian, of course) and explained that most upper-class Russians spoke French at that time.

There is also something similar in the expressiveness of the people, I imagine. The Russian style of teaching is also, I think, from that style. Very intense, abrupt, and explosive. In class our instructor would loudly castigate any student whom she thought was not performing up to the expected level.

Class was mostly question and answer, and heaven help the student who could not answer! It was always a challenge and encouraged students to do their homework.

Today I'm researching local economic development (LED). To give more information, the World Bank has a good document that discusses LED.

Why does this topic interest me? My father has worked on local economic development issues throughout Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia. I guess you could say I grew up with it.

Now I see it as a method that in a slightly modified form can be used to support development and stability operations in Southwest Asia and other war-torn areas. We have the materials, it is only applying them to the situation and providing trainers, who we know, to begin assessing and working with local populations.

What method would best reach the people and promote their interaction? What structure would we use? Who would fund it? These are questions I'm pondering now.

Stability in one region can only promote peace.

Afghanistan (De/Eng)

Lately I've been reading a book called Farishta by Patricia McArdle. It's about a U.S. diplomat, living and working in Afghanistan, and the challenges she faces. What I think is so important to learn from this book is clues or methods/ways to work successfully within this culture.

My interest in this subject really began when I recently talked to a soldier at the airport. He was en route back to Afghanistan for the second half of his tour of duty. What he told me led me to think about which conditions prepare the ground for successful reconstruction efforts.

What I have heard from this soldier, who himself comes from an immigrant background and understands this set of issues, is how important it is for the foreign negotiators in Afghanistan to use traditional signs of respect when they greet locals, and to ask after family members to build trust in the relationship.

The soldier told me about a group of soldiers who customarily did not use the traditional exchange of pleasantries and hand gestures that denote sincerity. The local population took offense at the perceived lack of respect and told the Taliban the soldiers' route for targeted killing. Luckily my narrator's group of soldiers came to the besieged soldiers' rescue and only the Humvees were destroyed.

Bad manners can be deadly...
